Description
This painting is my own take on the story of Orpheus, his magical lyre, and his tragic love story with Eurydice.
The story says that the women of Thrace, after stoning Orpheus to death, dismembered him, throwing his head and his lyre into the river Hebrus. After the Muses gathered Orpheus' limbs and buried him so that he could be reunited with his love in the Underworld, Jupiter sent his eagle to the river to retrieve the lyre, which he cast into the sky.
The boatman is laying out lights in the river. The lights are in the shape of the constellation, Lyra. So this single occupant of this secret part of Hebrus prepares the lyre and waits for Jupiter's emissary to claim it.
