Artist's Description
This painting is a collection of items which symbolize various aspects of my life. The central skull represents my confronting my own mortality over the last few years as I've battled cancer. The silver bowl is a trophy from one of my father's dog show victories--We raised German Shepard dogs when I was a kid. The candles and the laurel on the jug represent my life as a teacher. The apple is a nod to both my teaching and to me growing up in New York. Finally, encircling all of these objects, ever present in the background, is my palette--representing the art which drives me and saves me every day.
About James Andrews

James Andrews is an artist and teacher who has been living in the Pacific Northwest since 1999. Andrews work is best described as Narrative Surrealism. While he is skilled in classical figure drawing with graphite and color pencil, the bulk of his professional work is in painting. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1973, Andrews' family moved out to Long Island's beautiful East End when he was a toddler. The skies, waters and other scenic features of the beloved Hamptons area, which he will always refer to as “home” populate many of his paintings. Andrews has always had a love of art and the stories it can tell. This love led him to pursue and earn a BFA in Theatrical Design from the State University of New York at New Paltz and,...
