Artist's Description
This diptych uses the symbols of the olive tree and the planet, Mars to represent peace and war, respectively. I made this a diptych to reinforce the idea of how separate these concepts are. There is nothing between these things but time and space, in the painting. I wanted to show how long and lonely the journey from war to peace is. The inclusion of the boat is to show that it is a distance which CAN be crossed, while the oar--broken off and used as a grave marker--shows that the journey always takes tremendous sacrifice.
